StripMe.org

Hot on the heels of my recent post about stripping comments from CSS

Dave called saying he'd written a PHP script which did exactly what I needed. He gave me a test address and sure enough it worked.

I immediately bought stripme.org, set to work on designing a logo, made a homepage and asked Ben to setup a PHP site for me on a live production server.

24 hours later, we had a working site*, with instructions on how to use the service.

In total we've spent about 4-5 hours getting the site up and running:

Concept
15 minutes (including posting the idea on Yandleblog)
Coding the Stripper
15 minutes
Logo/Site Design1 hour
Domain & Server Setup
3 hours

*It took us a while to suss out is how to get the service working in a way that meant URL's din't have to have question marks on them but that's done now.

If you don't want to rely on a 3rd-party service for your stylesheets, it's OK because we've made the source code available under the MIT open source license so you can run it yourself.

What Next for this Project?

We'll keep an eye on the stats and if the site gets popular we…
  • will setup caching in Squid
  • might put Google Ads (or some such) on the homepage
  • might sell API keys.
If we go down that last route, files that are processed for free will contain link to a 'sponsors' page at the top of the file. This kind of goes against the point of the stripme service in that it puts a comment in so we would have to consider this carefully.
